Project Description

From Flying Doctors to a Health Organization

Amref Health Africa (African Medical & Research Foundation) was founded 1957 and is an independent, non-profit, African NGO.
With headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, Amref Health Africa is the largest Africa-based healthcare nonprofit, serving an average of nine million people per year across 35 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The NGO strengthens health systems and trains African health workers to respond to the continent’s most critical health challenges:

  • maternal and child health,
  • non-communicable and infectious disease (Cancer, Diabetes, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, etc),
  • access to clean water and sanitation,
  • surgical and clinical outreach.

Amref’s approach is community-based and makes the people they reach partners, rather than just beneficiaries. Over 97% of their global staff are Africans, so they are always tackling African challenges with African expertise.

Dinese Hannewald has donated over 10,000 Euro to AMREF since 2015. She is also a Board Member of AMREF Health Africa /Flying Doctors e.V. since 2014.
